The Weighted Vest Advantage: Why We Recommend It at WellShift for Sustainable Weight Loss

At WellShift, we’re committed to helping you lose weight and keep it off, with strategies grounded in science, not hype. One powerful, underrated tool we often recommend is the weighted vest.

It might look like something from a CrossFit gym, but don’t let that intimidate you. New research shows that this simple tool may be one of the best ways to preserve your metabolism and prevent rebound weight gain.

🔬 The Research: Weighted Vests Help Protect Against Weight Regain

A 2025 pilot study published in the International Journal of Obesity explored whether wearing a weighted vest during a calorie-restricted diet impacted long-term outcomes in older adults with obesity and osteoarthritis.

Participants were split into two groups:

  • One group followed a weight loss plan with calorie restriction only.

  • The other group followed the same diet but also wore a weighted vest for 10 hours per day.

After 6 months, both groups lost a similar amount of weight (~11 kg). But here’s where it gets interesting:

  • The vest group regained only half the weight by the 2-year mark.

  • The non-vest group regained all the weight they had initially lost.

  • The weighted vest group also preserved more resting metabolic rate (RMR)—a key factor in maintaining weight loss.

👉 In short, weighted vest use during weight loss may help preserve metabolism and reduce weight regain—something we all want when the diet ends.

⚖️ Enter the Gravitostat Theory: Your Body Senses Load

Backing this up is a fascinating concept known as the Gravitostat Theory. This theory suggests that your body has internal sensors that detect weight or gravitational load and regulate appetite, metabolism, and energy expenditure accordingly.

In other words, your body knows how heavy you are, and it adjusts your physiology to maintain that weight. Lose weight too quickly without a compensating load, and your body may try to “correct” the loss by slowing metabolism or increasing hunger.

A groundbreaking study published in eClinicalMedicine (2020) explored this by adding weighted vests to a group of adults with moderate obesity. After just 3 weeks, the group with the heaviest vest experienced:

  • Significant reductions in body fat

  • Preservation (or even slight gains) in lean mass

  • No significant drop in resting metabolic rate

Even more compelling: most weight loss programs involving calorie restriction or even exercise typically lead to loss of lean mass and reduced RMR, which makes it harder to maintain progress.

The implication? Adding external load (like a weighted vest) may preserve your lean muscle and prevent the metabolic “crash” that often leads to rebound weight gain.

🏋️♀️ Why We Recommend Weighted Vests at WellShift

We believe weight loss isn’t just about what you lose, but what you keep. Preserving lean mass and your metabolism is key to lasting success.

Here’s why weighted vests are part of our toolkit, in addition to a resistance training program.

Protects Resting Metabolic Rate
Preserves Lean Body Mass (Muscle)
Provides Neurological & Hormonal Feedback via Load Sensing
Improves Outcomes Post-GLP-1 Use or Dieting
Enhances Movement Efficiency Without Overstressing Joints

We usually recommend starting with 5–10% of your body weight worn for 1–3 hours daily, gradually increasing load and duration based on tolerance. There are several different options you can buy  (like these), and we advise buying something comfortable. Start with lower weight options, and increase as your body adapts. Try to wear the vest during normal day-to-day activities, and include it on walks either outside or on a treadmill for added benefits.

Weighted Vests are especially helpful for those in our programs who are:

  • Transitioning off GLP-1 medications

  • Recovering from diet fatigue

  • Struggling with metabolic adaptation

  • Looking to maximize fat loss without muscle loss

📌 Bottom Line

Your body adapts to the weight it carries. And when that weight goes down, your body fights to restore it, unless you give it a reason not to.

Weighted vest use is a research-backed way to support fat loss, preserve lean mass, and protect your metabolism, giving you a better shot at long-term success.
